Sixteen parents and teachers gathered Thursday evening, October 29th, for the first one of the school year PWC (Parents Who Care) meeting! In my opinion, it was the best one yet. Most everyone in the room offered great ideas for promoting Telesis in so many different ways to the community, potential Telesis parents, and correcting those annoying myths that continue to circulate around town. They set some lofty, but attainable, goals and plan to meet again next week to check their progress. In addition, it is comforting to note that it was parents who stepped up to do the extra work, not teachers. It was a great evening and I believe one that will be remembered as a hallmark to new growth for Telesis. Thanks to the Telesis Team Members who were there to lend lots of support.

MCC TO GIVE COMPASS TEST ON CAMPUS

MCC will be on our campus on Tuesday, October 13th to give all Seniors the Compass Test used for placement of students into their college courses. All Seniors are encouraged to participate as this is a free service offered to Telesis. The testing will begin a 1:00 and generally takes 2 hours to complete. All students need to make the necessary schedule adjustments to insure that they do not miss this opportunity. Mrs. Etcheberria-Jacobs has been producing major shows in Lake Havasu for many years. She will be bringing her experience and expertise to the students at Telesis in the Junior Academy and Academy levels. Attention Social Studies Teachers and Students: Lake Havasu City’s Freedom Bridge Foundation, with special thanks to the Department of History at Arizona State University, is holding a series of essay contests that are open to all Arizona schools. The winning essays will forever be engraved as the “76 Moments of Freedom” markers along the Freedom Bridge Memorial Walkway with the students’ name and school also engraved on the marker.The Freedom Bridge Memorial Walkway runs along the world famous London Bridge Channel in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Starting at the London Bridge and continuing to the soon-to-be built Freedom Bridge, this Memorial Walkway will become a new visitor attraction along with the Freedom Park and Freedom Bridge itself. The Telesis Green Team is proud to announce that they have now recycled twenty of the 55 gallon capacity bags containing plastic bottles. Recently, we also began to recycle discarded paper and newspapers used in the classrooms. We have filled a normal commercial dumpster with our efforts that began after Winter Break. We have also done fairly well with the recycling of aluminum cans.

We would like to thank the students and staff at Telesis for their support in the club's recycling effort. We encourage all to recycle what they are able to. Thanks as well for keeping our campus cleaner.

SPRING ART, MUSIC, TALENT SHOW, AND SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

The Spring Arts Festival & Book Fair 2009 is coming up April 23rd. You won't want to miss this event! Students of all ages will participate in a talent show and art exhibit. A panel of judges will judge both. The Telesis band members will perform and the Telesis senior class will prepare wonderful food concession items that will be for sale. The theme will be Lights! Camera! Action! and participants are encouraged to come dressed as a movie star or cartoon character which will also be judged by the judging panel. The festival will be held in conjunction with a Scholastic Book Fair making it possible to purchase books for all ages that night to be taken home after the event. The traditional “Read with the Principal” booth will be open from 5:30 to 6:30 for younger students to show off their reading skills. Tickets will be pre-sold and available at the event. Come one; come all to Telesis -- the fun starts at 5:00, but you are welcome to join us anytime between 5:00 and 8:00.

National Honor Society FOOD AND TOY DRIVE

Members of the Telesis NHS are accepting donations of non-perishable food and unwrapped new toys for needy families this holiday season. TELESIS GREEN TEAM RECEIVES GRANT

The Telesis Green Team has received a $200.00 grant from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. Only 18 grants were given to Arizona High Schools to promote recycling and support club activities. The Green Team will report to the AQED on their recycling efforts at the end of the school year. Hopefully, the money will help students make recycling a part of their daily life at school. This is the first year the AQED had awarded the grants. Join our effort to recycle.

The Telesis Book Fair Committee would like to thank all students and parents who came out last Thursday to support our Fall Book Fair. Telesis was able to spend just over a $1,ooo for new library and classroom books. Just think what we could do if more students and parents showed up.

The National Junior Honor Society was able to collect about 40 to 50 more library books. This effort will continue and those who would still like to donate can do so by dropping their read books to the Office.

October 3rd, was the day approved by the Arizona Department of Education that public schools can announce their annual achievements. Telesis is busting with pride to announce that it has once again maintained its AYP status. AYP stands for Adequate Yearly Progress. In addition, Telesis Preparatory Academy has achieved a Performing Plus label for both the Academy (high school) and the Lower Levels (K-8). These status ratings are based on the student scores on the Aims Tests. This is our third year in a row of obtaining these ratings.
It has been the hard work of a dedicated staff, maintaining high standards for our students that have made both of these achievements possible. Way to go Telesis Tigers!

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent/Teacher Conference are September 23rd to 25th. That is Tuesday through Thursday. Monday is a regular school day. Tuesday through Friday are early release days. TELESIS OPEN HOUSE: SEPTEMBER 16TH

Telesis will open their doors and roll out the welcome carpet to parents and community members at the annual Open House on September 16th. One special hour, 6:30-7:30, will provide those in attendance to visit classrooms and meet teachers. Additional information will also be available such as the tax credit program which is separate from other schools in the community. Mohave Community College will be on hand to answer questions about educational opportunities as graduation comes closer. Last, but not least, the new Telesis Preparatory pins will be available for purchase for only $3 so everyone can showoff their school spirit. Parents of Telesis students will be asked to sign up for a conference appointment for the following week, September 23 through 25, on a first come first served basis. Coming to Open House will provide parents with the opportunity to sign up for the parent-teacher conference day and time of your choice.

Thursday, May 29th, TELESIS will host its Spring Scholastic Book Fair and Arts Festival. The festivities will begin at 5:00 PM and go until 7:30. Our band and vocal groups will perform and be followed by our first ALL-STUDENT talent show. There will be a "Guitar Hero" Contest and Art work on display. Lower level will also display their art in their rooms. Pizza and soda will be available during the event. SUPPORT SUMMER READING. SUPPORT OUR ART /MUSIC DEPARTMENT. It is bound to be a night of fun for the entire family.

Our end of the school year Award Ceremonies are almost upon us. Academic Awards, Attendance Awards, Citizenship Awards and the Tiger Cub and Tiger Paw Awards will be given out at 2 separate ceremonies.

June 4th- Wednesday. Kindergarten, Early Elementary, Elementary, and Intermediate Award Ceremony. This ceremony will begin at 8:30 on our Basketball Court. Parents and guests are asked to bring appropriate chairs for seating during presentations. Individual classroom awards will be given out in the classrooms after the larger gathering.

June 5th- Thursday. Junior Academy and Academy Award Ceremony to be held at the London Bridge Resort Convention Center. Students should be dropped off and picked up at this location. This ceremony will begin at 8:30. Students should be in uniform as this is not a free dress day. This ceremony should last about 2 hours.

The staff and administration invite all parents and interested community members to attend these ceremonies to help us honor those deserving students for their success this school year.

Charter schools are educational alternatives that empower families with additional choices for their children. By providing flexibility to educators while insisting on results, charter schools are helping foster a culture of educational innovation, accountability, and excellence. Charter schools also encourage parental involvement and help contribute to the national effort to close the achievement gap.

The No Child Left Behind Act has played a central role in America's efforts to improve our public schools and expand the opportunities available to our children. In 2007, American students reached record achievement levels on reading and math tests, and the achievement gap is beginning to close. Charter schools have been an important part of this success. NEW TREES PLANTED FOR EARTH/ARBOR DAY

Two new trees were planted on the Telesis Campus with money earned from the sale of our Nick and Willy Pizza Cards. A new Sissoo Tree and a Purple Plum Tree are the latest additions to our campus. Students raised $200.00 to cover the cost of the trees and to pay to have them planted. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. Soon, both trees will provide us with much needed shade here in the desert. The Green Team would also like to thank the student body for their support in our recycling of plastic bottles. More and more plastic bottles are being dropped into the recycle containers.

Soon we hope to have can recycling as well.

TELESIS READ TO FEED DONATION

Telesis is proud to announce that the Read to Feed Campaign raised $671.17 to aid needy families worldwide in an effort to make them self-supporting. GREAT JOB TO ALL READERS WHO TOOK PART! A special thank you to those who supported the cause with their pledges of money.

We raised enough money to buy what is called a Knitting Basket, 2 lamas for two needy families and the remainder of our funds to purchase ducks/geese or chicks for more families.

First Members Inducted Into Honor Society

The first inductees of the Telesis Chapters of the National Honor Society and Junior Honor Society were sworn in at a special candle ceremony at the Island Inn on March 27th marking another important “first” for Telesis. They were joined by family and friends, as well as Telesis staff and Board Members.

Seven Telesis Academy students took the oath to uphold the principles of the National Society; they were joined by three freshmen and six Junior Academy students inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. The new members received their membership cards and pins before listening to our guest speaker from Mohave Community College, Linda Reisdorph, who stressed the importance of the traits beyond academics associated with the National Honor Society.
The new members and guests also took part in a reception afterward to honor their membership achievement. A memorable evening was had by all.

National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society and Telesis

We are proud to announce the highly anticipated arrival of the Telesis Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The NHS is for Academy students who are sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The NJHS is for students in Junior Academy and freshmen at the Academy level. Members of both oganizations are considered to be among the best students in the nation.

Membership in both organizations is by invitation only by our Faculty Council. They will be looking at all students who first meet the required 3.0 or better GPA (grade point average). Then letters of interest are sent to those students who qualify in their GPA. The students are asked to identify their school activities and community involvement. Once this information is received by the Faculty Council, a final decision will be made on each student's entry qualifications. If a student qualifies under these two conditions, they are formally invited into the organization and join at a special induction ceremony to take place in early spring. Incentives for members include a lapel pin, a special recognition on their diplomas, and wearing honor cords at graduation. They are able to shop at the National Honor Society Store.

The biggest advantage of membership in the NHS and NJHS is that it gives a student an advantage on college and scholarship applications. The NHS requirements of GPA and school/community involvement are some of the first questions asked on these applications. It also shows future schools and employers that they are highly motivated individuals who go above and beyond. And, above all, it puts our students on an equal footing with the top students all over the nation.

Look for the list of our first inductees which will be announced as soon as the selection process has been completed.

This is indeed an exciting and important event for the students at Telesis!

NICK AND WILLY'S PIZZA CARD FUNDRAISER

The Telesis Green Team, the environmental club, is selling Nick and Willy's Pizza Cards. The cost is $10.00. What do you get? You get 10 free pizzas. When you order, you can get a free one-topping pizza of the same size as your order. Tell them you have the card when ordering. If you order multiple pizzas, you can get multiple free ones. Great for parties or large group gatherings.

The funds raised will help us plant a special tree for Arbor Day on our campus in April. See Mr. Dornton in Room 29 to purchase one of the cards. It is important that we support the efforts of our students.

Junior Academy and Academy Students (Traditional grades 7-12) will be dropped off in the same area as last school year. Pull into Starlite lane and immediately turn right into the lower parking lot. Pull as far forward as possible. Students will enter/exit vehicles at this location and then proceed to the campus for classes.

Students who drive must provide a copy of driver’s license and insurance card to the main office. Student parking will be facing the field in the lower parking lot.

7:45 – 2:45
Intermediate (Traditional grades 5-6) will be dropped off in the same area as last school year. Pull into Starlite lane and immediately turn right into the lower parking lot. Pull as far forward as possible. Students will enter/exit vehicles at this location and then proceed to the new building at the bottom of the campus (Building G) for classes.

7:45 – 2:45
Elementary Students (Traditional grades 3-4) Elementary students may enter the cul-de-sac for drop off. Pull car as far forward as possible. Students will enter/exit vehicles at this location and then proceed through the gates to the campus for classes.

8:00 – 3:00
Early Elementary Students (Traditional grades 1-2) will be dropped off in the same area as last school year. Pull into Starlite lane and immediately turn right into the lower parking lot. Please remember to drive slowly and to follow any directives given by our Safety Officer!

Take note of the fencing around the entrance of the school. This is designed to help keep children safe. Be sure to use caution when backing up in the cul-de-sac so that you do not back into the fence. When visiting the campus, please use guest parking and do not park or stop in the cul-de-sac.

Also, a reminder that ANY AND ALL visitors to the campus must register with the main office before being allowed to enter any area of the campus. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to provide a safe environment for your precious cargo!!!

Have you taken your tax credit?

What if you could determine where your tax dollars go? What if you were in charge of the congressional purse strings?

The Arizona School Tax Credit allows you to do just that. You can send your tax dollars directly to Telesis Preparatory Academy in order to foster after-school and extra-curricular activities. Parents are always talking about how important these activities are; well here’s your chance to put your money where your heart is. Here’s an example of how it might work:

Jane Doe, a single tax payer, will owe $100 to the state of Arizona when her taxes are due April 15. She doesn’t know that yet, but she wants to give some money to her daughter’s school because she’s seen a lot of success with their after-school music program. The music teacher sent home a note asking parents to designate tax credit funds to the music program so they can replace and repair worn-out instruments. Her daughter doesn’t participate in the program now, but she’d like to next year. Jane decides to donate $100 to the program. When she prepares her taxes in the spring, she owes nothing to the State because her tax credit donation reduced her liability to zero.

What if Jane Doe only donated $50? It would reduce her liability by $50, and she would end up owing $50 to the State.

What if she donated $200? If she donated more than she was liable for, the leftover funds would be applied to next year’s liability, so she would owe nothing this year and still get another $100 reduction next year.

The Arizona Department of Revenue has put together a brochure you can view that will probably answer most questions. If you have other questions, give us a call.

Telesis Girls Teach Lesson in Courage

Yesterday was my birthday and it wasn't until Friday that I finally figured out what I wanted.

Just the other day I took an online quiz, and one of the questions was what character from the Wizard of Oz am I most like. I thought I was a perfect fit for the scarecrow, but after Friday I now know that I'm more like the cowardly lion than I'd like to admit.

I want what the cowardly lion wanted - courage. I don't want your run of the mill courage. I want the courage that I saw exhibited by the Lake Havasu Telesis girls basketball team.

Before Telesis took on our Kingman Academy of Learning, I did some research on the league's Web site and saw that Telesis was 0-1. The Web site reported a score of 75-0, but that couldn't have been right, could it?

Unfortunately, it was correct. And it is correct that KAOL beat them 68-0 on Friday.

Stephen Crane wrote "The Red Badge of Courage" in 1895. If he had seen the play of Telesis on Friday, he would have never written his book and would have allowed someone in the year 2007 to write it. It was truly as remarkable a show of courage that I have ever seen take place on a basketball court or any athletic field. Ever.

After losing their opening game to Quartzsite Scholars, I am left to wonder what was going on in the minds of those young ladies. Did they consider quitting? I hope not. The Telesis Tigers have a lot to offer to those who witness their games.

I do know that they aren't quitters. Telesis did not lay down one bit against KAOL. They kept trying and trying. I only saw one moment where one of their players got frustrated. Her coach quickly took the time to talk to her, and that was the end of that.

I have to look at myself through the mirror that the Telesis team has held up in front of me. Do I have what it takes to come off of a 75-0 drubbing and be willing to face another one?

As I begin another trip around the bright yellow orb in the sky, I have discovered that I need a dose of Telesis-like courage.

When my boss hands me that assignment that presses me down to the core, I will remember Telesis and what they have given me, even if they don't realize it.

I'll leave our cozy little confines here at the Miner and face the challenge as if I was trying to score a basket.

I have to do this. Though Telesis scored nothing, they didn't try for nothing. It is my moral responsibility to the Telesis Lady Tigers that their effort on Friday never goes down in history as nothing.

After all, they gave me the best birthday present I could have ever asked for.

Environmental Club News

The newly formed environmental club at Telesis, The Green Team, is pleased to announce our campus wide recycling program for plastic bottles. Thanks to the help of Allied Waste Services of Lake Havasu we now have special recycling receptacles around campus. The "Greenies" are hoping to have can recycling soon as well. "RECYCLE YOUR CELL PHONE. IT'S AN EASY CALL."

The federal government's EPA has announced "Recycle Your Cell Phone. It's An Easy Call." The EPA has partnered with the following companies: AT&T Wireless, Best Buy, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Office Depot, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Staples, and T-Mobile in this campaign.

Recycling a cell phone offers an opportunity for everyone to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and conserve natural resources. An estimated 100 to 130 million cell phones are no longer being used, many languishing in storage. If Americans recycled 100 million phones, we could save enough upstream energy to power more than 194,000 U.S. households for a year. If consumers were able to reuse those 100 million cell phones, the environmental savings would be even greater, saving enough energy to power more than 370,000 U.S. homes each year.

Right now less than 20 percent of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year. LET'S CHANGE THIS. RECYCLE THAT OLD PHONE AND SAVE RESOURCES!
